 The Foundation Book Club

The Emirates Literature Foundation Book Club meets all through the year, with monthly book selections that span across genres. Closer to the launch of the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature, the book club starts to focus on authors who will be attending the Festival, giving members a chance for an even richer Festival experience.

Our selection for November is The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead.

Set in 1960s Florida during the Civil Rights Movement, this Pulitzer Prize-winning novel follows Elwood Curtis, a bright, idealistic Black teenager whose future seems full of promise. Inspired by the teachings of Dr Martin Luther King Jr., Elwood believes that hard work, education and doing the right thing can change his life. But when a miscarriage of justice sends him to the Nickel Academy, a brutal reform school for boys, his faith in fairness and humanity is put to the test.

There, he befriends Turner, a fellow student whose cynical outlook challenges everything he believes. As the two boys struggle to survive an institution built on cruelty, corruption and systemic racism, they must confront a difficult question: is it better to hold on to your principles or do whatever it takes to survive? Inspired by the horrifying true history of a Florida reform school, The Nickel Boys is a powerful and deeply moving exploration of friendship, injustice, resilience, and the lasting consequences of America’s troubled past.

Teen Book Club

Our selection for November is Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins, the latest title in the bestselling Hunger Games series.

Set 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games – long before Katniss Everdeen stepped into the arena – this gripping prequel takes readers back to Panem.

Sixteen-year-old Haymitch Abernathy is selected for the 50th Hunger Games, a special edition of the deadly competition known as the Quarter Quell, in which twice the usual number of children are forced into the arena. Suddenly, his hopes for an ordinary future are replaced by a fight for survival in a world where violence is entertainment and the truth is controlled by those in power.

But Haymitch isn’t interested in playing by the Capitol’s rules. As alliances form, loyalties are tested and the true purpose of the Games becomes increasingly clear, he begins to realise that survival may come at a devastating cost. Packed with shocking twists and impossible choices, Sunrise on the Reaping is a thrilling and deeply moving story about courage, resistance and the price of refusing to surrender.
